Ocean Youth Trust Scotland

Organisation

The West Coast of Scotland has some of the finest sailing waters in the world, yet many young Scots have no knowledge of the sea and have never stepped beyond their home town. Many lack the means to enjoy outdoor learning and the personal and social development that a challenge voyage can provide. Support from The Cross Trust has meant that disadvantaged young people have been able to take part in Adventure under Sail, explore the Scottish coastline, and gain fresh confidence and valuable life skills. The close knit community of the boat encourages firm friendships to be made among the young crew. These friendships last well beyond the voyage and for young people suffering isolation are vital for gaining peer support on their return home.

"One of the real benefits for me was I had some time for myself. I’m not supposed to say this but when I was on the boat I completely forgot about home and that was a great feeling. When I came back I felt physically better and stress free. It was a magnificent feeling. It was amazing!” (a young carer)
